Phasing

This was one of the earliest events in the area, being cut by Grubenhaus 012AD08030 as well as the ditches 012AD08014 (the latest event), 012AD08016 and 012AD08331. The relationship to the other early ditch in the immediate area (012AD08467) was not established. No identifiable animal bones were recovered from the excavated segment, and all of the 15 sherds of pottery were of a late Roman date.

Discussion

The fill of this east-west aligned ditch was slightly lighter (Munsell colour 10YR 4/4) than the more usual 10YR 4/3 in the area. There were 10% angular chalk inclusions (0.5-2.5 cm diameter). It is virtually invisible on the gradiometer survey plot, and thus it is not possible to say whether it continued on in an easterly direction. The pot recovered was almost all from jars, with one grey ware cooking pot sherd. All the indications are that this is part of an earlier phase of enclosure.

The ditch was cut into sand and chalk gravel, with a U-shaped profile.
